Milton shaved off his beard! Besides feedback, we talk about Netflix in Brazil, the adorable Capivari currency, and people who can't tell time. Also, Brazil is one of the eight most complicated countries to visit.

Kinsey,
If you followed that link I gave you (http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/681/do-mcdonalds-milkshakes-contain-seaweed), the subject of a gender-neutral term for is addressed and terms were provided:
1) Neat
(I remember it being used in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar)
2) Beef (just like the meat), the plural is beeves
(I once heard it in a western television show set in the late 19th century.)

Peter,
It's an interesting discussion, but I'm not entirely satisfied with any of the terms that were suggested (except for some of the made up ones that don't really exist). "Neat" is just too darned archaic. No one would understand it or even be able to guess at the meaning. Plus it has the disadvantage of being a homonym of another common English word. "Beef" also doesn't quite work, especially in the sentence Milton used: "When they kill the beef . . ." would just be downright confusing. Ultimately, we may be forced to add "steakosaurus" to the English lexicon.

I do not know where to start, I enjoyed the whole episode from the beginning to the end. I do not know when I laughed so hard, probably also while listening to one of your Brazilianisms episodes.
To start I knew that the episode will be really good when Milton had mistaken the episode number and to top it off I found it really funny when Kinsey said to Milton that he was almost killed and Milton answered: Oh, Ok! :))
Now to the serious things, I am really glad you are alright Milton and I hope you will never be hurt in any way. Take care and watch out for the lunatics out there.
Well maybe Milton doesn't check the Brazilianisms website everyday and neither do I, but I check it about once every 3 days. This podcast is addictive!
Now that Milton shaved his goatee he should stay away from pool halls. I am kdding of course, he looks alright with our without the goatee.
I never knew the difference between an ox, steer, bull and bullock. It is all a mish mash in my head even now.
I was shocked when you said that you didn't got your permanent visa yet. One thing that I hate in my country is birocracy and I will probably go to Brazil and also be slowed down by this birocracy that only makes the growth of a country to take place at a slower pace.
Yes Milton, that is a good question, the Real is real or royal :) And I am very interested about this because our currency is called Leu, which means Lion. I do not know how and who came with the idea of calling Romanian's currency as Lion. We are in Europe, there are no lions here! I find it really weird.
There were other great things in the podcast like, "needing a notebook" on you all the time to remember all the things that Brazilians ask of you and about not respecting time which I saw also in many articles online.
Thanks for a great episode and I look forward for the next one.
Tchau!

Mike,
I'm glad you liked the episode. (The were lions in Europe long ago, but they all got wiped out by the ice age.)

Which Battlestar Galactica is Milton watching? The original one from the '70s or the newer one?
Which Doctor Who is Simone watching? The classic (Hartnell through McCoy), the Peter Cushing movies, the 1996 TV movie or the new series?
I knew I had become an old fart when I found myself asking people in their 20s, "Which Battlestar Galactica?"

He's watching the new one. Or at least he's supposed to be. I don't think he's actually started yet. Simone is watching the new Doctor Who. Netflix in Brazil only has the new one. I once sent Milton an old Patrick Troughton episode that he said was so horrible that he would never even look at another Doctor Who episode ever again. Of course, his memory is so bad that he doesn't remember that and has actually enjoyed a couple episodes of the new one.
