Smoking Kills!

Cigarette warnings are much more emphatic in Portugal than here in the US. This translates as "Smoking kills".
And here is one that says "Smoking may cause a slow and painful death":

The duty free shop in the airport carries cigarette packs with translated warnings:

Don't you have graphic warnings about smoking in the US? Have a look at ours here!

Not at all. Here in the US our cigarette warnings are much much tamer.

Yes, but does anyone in Portugal actually pay attention to these warnings?
"Ah, what the hell, I'm gonna die whether I smoke or not. *puff puff*"

Well, it is Europe after all.

Canada's warnings are big like that as well; I think it's mandatory now for the warning to take up half the pack, and it includes nasty rotten tongue and lung photos (or my favourite, two sad-eyed children, "you're killing us!). When the new warning label laws first came into effect some companies tried to market sleeves that smokers could stick their packs in to avoid seeing the awful photos, but it didn't catch on; people just don't care, and the warnings don't really register.

What's funny is that I was under the impression that the US led the world in cigarette warnings. Now I'm starting to get the impression that we've been left in the dust by everyone else.
